Where ideas flow.

The Watcher in the Woods

Garbed in shadows black as night;

Hair as red as fire;

Eyes the fiercest emerald,

filled with raging ire.

The Watcher lies

in wait.

Creeping in the darkness,

the shadows between the trees,

she hides alone, watching

those who wander where they please.

The Watcher in

the woods.

She tiptoes in the twilight

and whispers with the wind;

Sifting through the void of night,

waiting for ones to end.

Waiting to end

the ones who

dared to cross

her sacred trees.

Waiting to clutch

their souls and

hear them cry

their helpless pleas.

Mercy!

Pardon!

Pity!

Grace!

These hollow words they cry,

pleading with the Watcher

to simply let them by.

But the Watcher takes

all who dare to touch

her hallowed trees.

Eating their souls,

then melting away;

she vanishes with

the breeze.

One moment she’s there,

the next she’s gone,

but never does she leave.

The Watcher always

lies in wait,

creeping behind her trees.

    • Thank you! The concept had been stewing in my mind for a few weeks, and I finally decided to write it out. What with it being Halloween and all. ;P

  2. Lovely, and as stated above, haunting piece!

    The picture makes me excessively happy. I can’t quite explain it. It’s not really a serene, gazing at moonlight sort of happy, but an actual thriving, near blissful emotion. Similar to falling into a pile of newly washed pillows and inhaling their freshness, knowing you get to sleep after working an arduous eight hour shift.

    I don’t know what it is, but that picture makes me feel it.

  3. Thanks, Beth!

    And maybe you feel such joy because the trees have screaming faces? ;P

    And on a side note, the Watcher may or may not be Valeria…
    Just sayin… ;)

  4. Perfect Halloween post. Very creative poem for the season, though it would be great any time.
