In Remembrance
I remember your smile,
your bright, beaming smile,
when I would walk in late to church.
You would turn your head
and gasp – surprised!
A smile of joy on your face.
I remember your hugs –
such wonderful hugs!
How you would reach up and squeeze my neck.
Tears would sparkle
in your beautiful eyes
as you held me tight in that place.
I remember your laugh,
your bright, tinkling laugh,
after whispering a joke in your ear.
Peals of delight would spring
forth from your heart,
and we’d cackle together, in tune.
I remember your song –
that harmonious sound
which rang out from the depths of your soul
as you raised up your voice,
singing praises to God,
your Master, Redeemer and King.
Oh! How I’ll miss all these things!
I remember these things,
these mem’ries of you;
I hold them, as you held me tight.
And though I mourn for this loss
here on Earth,
I rejoice for your newfound delight!
And
I smile because you’re smiling,
I laugh because you’re laughing,
I sing because you’re shouting out
with joy in your new home,
dancing with our Saviour,
our Precious Lord and Mighty King.
And though your song has ended here,
a new one has begun;
That is why I smile, still.
That is why I sing.
~
In loving memory of my
Great Aunt Elva

What a beautiful tribute! That is so touching and uplifting – a wonderful example of how sadness is a declaration of love…sadness made so joyful by your words.

This brought tears to my eyes. Really, really beautiful. I love how easily your words always put pictures in my head. Everything you remember comes across so vividly. I was just skimming my journal today and I found the birthday poem you wrote for me that I printed. The only relation to this post is your poetry, but you’ve always been gifted in this area. :)

I like that people publish their work on the internet these days. Its nice to be able to share such a personal experience with like minded individuals. Its admirable how you have made the experience feel positive too, despite it’s huge emotional trauma. :)
Loved it!
